A 2016 US Congressional Research Service Report describes trade-based money laundering, or TBML, as “among the most challenging and pernicious forms of money laundering to investigate,” and cites U.S. government estimates that suggest billions or even tens of billions of dollars in illicit wealth is laundered through TBML schemes each year.
